When You Don't Know What Comes Next

The Sunday Letter October Trust Issue 014 cover for When You Don't Know What Comes Next.

OCTOBER: TRUST

Verse of the Month

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”
Proverbs 3:5

This Month's Journey

Throughout October, we'll reflect on something that sounds simple—but can be one of the hardest parts of faith:

What does it really mean to trust God?

Trust is easy when life makes sense.

It's much harder when the path ahead is unclear, when God's timing feels different from ours, or when the answer to a prayer isn't the one we hoped for.

But perhaps trust was never about having all the answers.

Perhaps it's about learning to move forward without them—believing that God can see what we cannot.

This month, we'll explore what it means to loosen our grip on certainty, surrender what we cannot control, and trust that even when we don't understand the path, we are still being led.

THE SUNDAY LETTER

October: Trust

Issue 014 — When You Don't Know What Comes Next

Dear Believer,

We like to know what's next.

The plan.

The answer.

The timeline.

The five steps between where we are and where we hope to be.

There is something comforting about knowing what comes next.

But life doesn't always give us that.

Sometimes we're standing in a place where the next chapter hasn't been written clearly enough for us to read.

A decision is unresolved.

A prayer is unanswered.

A door hasn't opened.

The future looks uncertain.

And we find ourselves asking God:

“What am I supposed to do now?”

📖 This Week's Scripture

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”
Proverbs 3:5

We often read this verse as encouragement.

But there's also a challenge hidden inside it.

Lean not on your own understanding.

In other words:

There will be moments when you won't understand.

And you'll still be asked to trust.

We Want the Map. God Often Gives Us the Next Step.

Think about Abraham.

God told him:

“Go from your country, your people and your father's household to the land I will show you.”
Genesis 12:1

Not:

Here is the complete itinerary.

Not:

Here is exactly how everything will work out.

Just:

Go.

And Abraham went.

There is something uncomfortable—and beautiful—about that kind of faith.

Because sometimes God doesn't hand us the map.

He gives us enough light for the next step.

And then asks us to trust Him with the rest.

Uncertainty Doesn't Mean You're on the Wrong Path

This is something worth remembering.

We sometimes interpret uncertainty as a warning:

Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

Maybe God isn't here.

Maybe I missed the sign.

But not knowing what comes next doesn't necessarily mean you've taken a wrong turn.

Sometimes it simply means you haven't reached the part of the story where the answer becomes visible yet.

There are chapters of life that only make sense when we look backward.

The closed door.

The unexpected delay.

The plan that changed.

The person we met because something else didn't work out.

At the time, we couldn't see the connection.

Later, we could.

Trust Doesn't Mean Doing Nothing

Trusting God isn't the same as sitting still and waiting for life to happen.

You can pray and make the phone call.

Trust God and submit the application.

Ask for guidance and do your research.

Have faith and take the next responsible step.

Trust isn't passivity.

It's moving forward without demanding that you know the entire outcome first.

You do what is yours to do.

And you leave with God what was never yours to control.

Maybe You Don't Need the Whole Answer Today

Sometimes our minds are living six months ahead while God is asking us to be faithful today.

We want to know:

Will this work?

Will I get there?

What if something goes wrong?

What happens after that?

And then after that?

And after that?

But perhaps today's grace was only meant for today's questions.

Tomorrow will have its own.

So if you're facing uncertainty right now, maybe you don't need to solve your entire future tonight.

Maybe the question is smaller:

What is the next faithful thing I can do?

Do that.

Then trust God with what you still cannot see.

One Question for This Week

Ask yourself:

Where am I demanding certainty before I'm willing to trust?

Maybe it's your work.

Your family.

A relationship.

A dream.

A decision.

Your finances.

Your future.

Bring that one thing to God this week.

Not with the demand:

“Show me exactly how this ends.”

But with a different prayer:

“Show me what is mine to do today—and help me trust You with the rest.”

Until Next Sunday...

You don't need to see the whole road to take the next step.

You don't need every answer to keep moving.

And you don't need to understand everything God is doing in order to trust that He is still at work.

Sometimes faith looks less like certainty—

and more like taking one step into a future you cannot yet see.

So walk gently into this week.

Do what you can.

Release what you can't.

And when you don't know what comes next, remember:

God does.

With love,
